Huge Bill Scottish Power

Options
I'll give a quick background to this. I moved to my new property in October 2013, switched energy suppliers using the energy club to eon from scottish power in December 2013.

I was paying my bill for 6 months when EON rang me and told me there had been a mix up and I was still paying for the energy for my old property as they had pulled the details from the energy club and not the forms I had filled in.

Another 6 months of arguing I eventually got put back on scottish power. I contacted them and signed up this is now around April 2015! I checked my account and I was about £20 in debit. Happy i decided to use the energy club again to find the best deal and switched suppliers. I've been paying around £60 a month to Extra Energy and all is well.

Until yesterday I got a bill of scottish power saying I owe £1250 in bills for the periods of October 2013 till now? Ive logged into scottish power and looked at my energy consumption and they have lumped the whole cost in during feb 2015, even though my final bill in april states £20 in credit??

Is there anything I can do?

If you are being charged twice for the same usage, or being overcharged, then yes there is something you can do. However it is not clear, at least to me, exactly what has happened.

It sounds like Eon billed you for the wrong property for a considerable period. When they eventually switched you back to SP what was the effective date of the switch? Did they back-date the switch to when you originally requested it?

If so did Eon refund the payments you made to them? And is SP billing you for more than correct amount given the effective date of the switch?

A credit/debit balance on an energy account is absolutely meaningless UNLESS it comes immediately after a statement with ACTUAL rather than estimated meter readings. I fear that the initial mix up up occurred because you failed to contact Scottish Power when you first moved in as you are required to do as they would be supplying the property under a Deemed Contract. Any attempt to switch would have been blocked by Scottish Power. Whilst this mess was being sorted out, you would have been on Scottish Power's standard variable tariff. The only way to resolve this is by checking back to the meter readings when you moved in to calculate the actual amount of energy used when you were with Scottish Power. It there is an issue, then raise a complaint against Scottish Power. As it appears that the fault sits with you (i.e., you failed to contact them on moving in), then I doubt that Scottish Power will invoke the Back Billing Code. They will just continue to seek to recover the amount that they feel that they are owed.

The bit that it is unclear in your post is whether during this failed attempt at a switch any money was changing hands. If you were paying E.oN then I assume that this was repaid? I should add that £1250 for nearly two years of usage isn't that high.
