Broadly, the rules on travel relate to public transport. If he can show that no public transport is available to get home after the shift then I can see no justification for a sanction being applied.
  • Knw it lol, i put a lot of people forward for amazon myself and remember the riding a bike scenario. Makes sense, coming up to xmas now so they will get very very very busy.

They need to sort transport out to that place, they ran a bus service themselves to coincide with shifts when i was still working as an employment adviser.

From the ads online ive been shown theyre putting transport on but not until the end of next month now, last year it was mid September I think.

Even if its temporary work is work at the moment and its something even if it is amazon.

Hes now spoken to agency - theyre unwilling to change his shift to any other shift and have told him he either goes or he doesn't.

In that case what would his earnings be compared to the cost of a taxi home?

OK, I appreciate he won't be making very much money for the next few weeks, but if transport is going to be available soon it might be worth taking the hit to guarantee that he's going to be in work for the rest of the winter.

I presume he also has collegues in a similar position, and he doesn't live a gazillion miles away, so there's a fairly decent chance he will find someone to either blag a lift with for the short term or share a taxi with to keep the cost down a bit.

He could always keep looking for something else in the meantime...

Naa, they wont change shifts, the desirable shifts get filled very quickly as you would imagine and its really the late shifts that Amazon value. Actual amazon employees have the best shifts basically.

As said, may be worth taking a hit for a month then profiting, also may be worth getting a taxi to running transport as that may work out cheaper than taxi back home or he may be able to get a lift if he says he is willing to pay some petrol.

Did the jobcentre send him to this interview with the agency? DO they even know about any of this??

If not, then just don't tell them and don't worry about it

There's a bit more to it than just keeping the jobcentre happy and avoiding sanctions. Presumably he actually wants a job, and there's one here for him, albeit with a temporary transport problem in the evenings.

It's only a very short term problem though, and doesn't seem a big enough deal (to me) to turn down potential long term employment over, even if the job in't very profitable due to the transport costs in those first few weeks.

If people just said no and sat back every time a minor problem arises, then nobody would ever do anything.

I would think as well that if he can book taxis for regular times for the weeks needed he might be able to negotiate terms, plus I'm sure he won't be the only one.

breathe in, breathe out- You're alive! Everything else is a bonus, right? RIGHT??
  • He actually wants to work and doesn't want to lie to the job centre and would rather absolutely everything be official and done properly than lie and get nowhere.

Ive managed to sort something out for the next week or two now - hell make his own way there on the train with bicycle, get picked up by a friend of mine (travels from the town the warehouse is to the next town) after his shift and dropped into the next town (after the unlit stretch of road) from there hell cycle back.
Hell be doing CBT on his next few days off and ill be getting the scooter out for him and running as a "loan" until he gets paid.

Thanks for all the help and advice.
