would he get sanctioned?

He is currently claiming JSA. Has been since he lost his job at the beginning of the year. Has been doing absolutely everything he can to get back into work.
He went for a interview today and got offered the job, the agency then decided he would be on the 13:30 - 23:30 shift and he accepted thinking that the last train was at midnight. He is supposed to go for induction to the company tomorrow and start work Friday.
However because of the location of the company (15 miles away) and the fact the trains actually stop running at 10pm on that route so he would have almost no way of getting back unless he walked for 5 of those miles on a unlit road in the pitch black with no paths either side of the road (obviously unsafe and it would be stupid to walk 15 miles after a shift)
Question is, if after he calls the agency tomorrow to see if they could change him to a earlier or later shift and they say no, would he get sanctioned for telling them he wouldn't be able to work for them?

go jobcentre, speak to them, if he can get a printout using a journey planner showing last train times, he should be ok.
If it ends up being a case of 15 miles too far and doesnt want to work late, then he may get sanctioned. Sure thats not the case though.0 -
cycle or moped?Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0

He would cycle but the only road out of the town that comes towards our town is a 5 mile stretch of unlit country road with a national speed limit and no paths either side so isn't very safe. a cyclist has already been killed on that road after being hit by a car at night. He doesn't hold a CBT although I have suggested doing it - doesn't help in the very short term though as he is supposed to be at a induction (I believe its a shift long teaching him what to do and where things are) tomorrow.Takeaway_Addict wrote: »cycle or moped? No man is your friend, No man is your enemy. He may not have the money to buy a cycle or moped.
Mind you, if he has a licence, he could ask the JC+ advisor if there is any kind of loan available for purchasing and insuring/Taxing such a vehicle.
If you don't ask, you'll never know.
Op, could you not pick him up at the end of his shift?. After all, once he starts, he may find that someone else goes his way home (or even past a train station where the train home stops on route at that time of night).
Posted at the same time as you.
The JCP+ may well arrange for funds for a CBT if it gets him back into work.
Other than that, he will need to speak to the Agency and explain the situation. They may even have a worker on the same shift who can give him a lift both ways for a small weekly contribution.
As for will he be sanctioned ?. That depends on his advisor. If the Agency can't move his shifts or find him a lift, he needs to go directly to the JC+ and ask to speak to someone urgently about this issue.
If he has to rely on public transport, he can investigate what times the trains and buses start and stop and let his advisor know. They will then update his claimant info to reflect this, so they won't then add jobs to his 'apply for' list that he cannot get to.Never Knowingly Understood.

If he can afford a taxi home (or find an alternative) for tomorrow it's probably worth going in to find out more - there may be alternative shifts available or perhaps someone he can pay for a lift from or share taxis with?
I know it's a bit optimistic but it would be a shame to potentially scupper the opportunity by not going and finding out if an alternative manages to present itself.
If the shift is at 1.30 he probably has time to chat to the jobcentre in the morning beforehand.0 -
Do you drive so you could take him ?0

Is it Amazon or something?0

I would pick him up usually and have done in the past however I work Thursday + Friday nights myself so wont be able to.
Ill get him to ring around a few taxi firms to see what the cost would be to see if its financially doable.
If he had a CBT id drag my old moped out for him but I don't want him to be riding illegally/uninsured/unlicensed etc etc.
It would be a huge shame for him to not be able to go but the way its looking, doesn't look like hell be able to unless we can get it sorted in the morning

The agency aren't putting transport on until the end of next month.
the problem isn't getting there, he can easily get there its just getting home from the location at that time of night. If I could pick him up I would, but I have to work.No man is your friend, No man is your enemy. Every man is your teacher.

Knw it lol, i put a lot of people forward for amazon myself and remember the riding a bike scenario. Makes sense, coming up to xmas now so they will get very very very busy.
They need to sort transport out to that place, they ran a bus service themselves to coincide with shifts when i was still working as an employment adviser.0
