changing from monthly (toric) contact lenses to daily, anyone?

i'm with costco for my lenses & thought i'd trial some daily lenses as they'll work out more cost effective for my average use over the monthly ones that i have been using. i've been very happy with the comfort & vision of my monthly (just worn on a daily basis, not continual) bausch & lomb purevision, but just not wearing them enough to make the extra expense (plus cleaning solution, opti-free replenish is the only one i can use without a reaction) worth while, or so i thought...

i need toric lenses so choices are pretty limited but i've been given 5 sets each of acuvue moist & dailies aqua comfort plus to try. i've tried both & am failing miserably with them!

finding them very tricky to handle as they are so very thin compared to monthly ones, first time of trying i'd even dropped one in the sink & hadn't realised until later on that there wasn't a lense in one eye!

i do have a problem with a little dryness in one eye but tesco comfort drops usually take care of that. even with drops, i'm finding both these lenses very dry & uncomfortable, & i've not even worn them for any longer than a couple of hours each time.

i've had to make an appointment to go back for a re-fit as the right lense is very blurred so the prescription must need altering, even though it's the same as my last monthly lenses which were fine.

are dailies just not suitable for every one? are there any other types that i can try? is it perhaps the need for toric that is causing the issue? i know that vision won't be 100% with contacts, but the monthly ones appear far better compared to these 2 daily ones at the moment.

thanks for any replies :)

The problem is purevision are really thick, thicker than any other soft pre-packaged lens. You will struggle to cope with even other monthly lenses!

If you really want to stick to dailies all I can suggest is choosing a lens and persevering with handling - it will come with practice.
  • i used bosche and lombe, very drying . im now using the allon dailies as a trial and they are brilliant. my eyes were super dry with the monthly bosch and lombe, it was so blurry and difficult.

compared to three years ago there is more range of the strengths available in the dailies and even more than a few years before that.
try a different brand as the daily may work.
  • I am the opposite, tried toric lenses a few years ago and couldn't get away with them at all. So I tried dailies and have found them much more comfortable, although would get better vision with toric, I had to make a comprise.

I now use daysoft lenses and find they are just as good as the more expensive brands of dailies.

With contact lenses I think it's trial and error.

Please please please be careful wearing monthly torics on an ad hoc basis

Due to my script the most monthly torics were all I could tolerate and on the advice of my optician I wore them daily for up to 8 hours for 30 days then disposed of them

What no one told me was they couldn't be cleaned as well as they should have been. After 6 months I developed a abscess on the lens, just millimetres from my cornea. My lense wearing days are now over :(

Do not look at cost, look at what's best for the the health of your eyes

    thanks for the replies :)

ah, no wonder i'm struggling going from one of the thickest monthlies to these tissue paper thin dailies! purevision were definitely fine for me on the comfort side worn up to about 8 hours max., usually less, probably up to 10 times a month.

sorry to hear that Suki, i've been using the monthly lenses & using on a daily basis for about 2 years now with no issues but hadn't realised about the possible problem with cleaning. it was emphasised not to use them after they've been open for 30 days, no matter how many days they'd been used, & this is probably the reason why. wonder if the frequency of wear has any bearing on this, if you were wearing daily & i probably only use a max of 10 times a month? either way, it's something that should be made clearer. i know i read on here when i did a search that someone said they were 'happily' using the monthlies for longer than 30 days, it was probably you that replied & advised against this. if it's not made clear why not to do this, then people will risk it.

changing to daily was mainly a cost consideration, but also the convenience & better hygiene of wear & dispose. i've got my appointment on Monday so will persevere as i really would like the option of lenses instead of glasses all the time. might have to go somewhere else for a trial if costco are limited on toric options available. they did mention a new lense coming on to the market, but i don't when that was due.

    thanks again :)

Nothing will ever be as thick as purevision as that material is ancient in terms of contact lens materials, even the newer Purevision 2 is thinner though still thicker than anything else.

You could ask to try soflens for astigmatism that's a B&L product so thick for a daily but a lot of companies wouldn't have those on their core list any more but as far as I know they are still being manufactured so it's worth an ask.
  • I use Accuvue Oasys toric lenses and they are 2 weekly. I trialled loads and these my favourite, I can wear them all day comfortably and my eyes don't get that dry. You can also sleep in them apparently but I don't. Maybe have a try of these?
  • not heard of those or that type of wear before, thank you :) they sound very good from the info/reviews here, i'll see if costco do them but more than likely i'll have to go to my local opticians for those as they have a bigger range.

They're really thin! The thickest of the acuvues is acuvue2 and even then they are anorexic compared to purevision.

One of the staff used to joke that you could turn a purevision inside out and "pop" it in the air like the old rubber toys
  • perhaps i'm just an old fashioned gal Jen?! who needs ultra thin when i'm happy with my rubber tyre purevision's! :D

i did go into costco for something else yesterday & asked at the opticians about other brands that they can order, it appears that their range is much more extensive than i realised as they can order pretty much anything, they just keep a small range 'in-stock', which makes sense.

they might not be cheapest on the less popular items, but i'll check online first, asda seem to be about cheapest i've found up to now.
