New payment page

Just bought a small item on ebay, but instead of going to paypal to pay a box popped up to log into my paypal account. I entered my password and the payment was taken immediately I hit the pay now button, using my default payment method.

I did not see an option to change the payment method as you got with the old way. The payment was taken the instant I hit the pay now in button.

It didn't worry me this time as the item was only £2.39. However, I sometimes change from the default bank account payment to a credit card payment for larger purchases. Now I don't have this option I won't be using ebay for any purchase that has to go on my credit card.

There was a link to tell them what I thought of the new system, so I clicked it and gave them both barrels.

With a bit of luck they will change it soon.

It sounds like you've clicked to sign up for the new Fast Check Out where your Ebay and Paypal accounts are linked. It can be disabled.

The faster checkout still allow you to change payment method, just ensure you read through the page as the layout are difference.

And yes PayPal is being cheeky as bank transfer are cheaper for them to process vs credit card.

No, just checked and I'm not signed up to fast payments.

I'm not signed up to faster checkout.

The checkout page I saw gave the option to pay via paypal or a credit card without going via paypal. But my point is if you choose paypal you don't get the option to pay via an alternative method listed in paypal. You also don't get to see if the payment is going to come from your paypal account, if you have enough money in it, or part from your paypal account and part from a card/bank account, or all from your default method.

It's not paypal, as I said, you don't got to the paypal site. Instead ebay automatically send a request to paypal to make the payment by your default method.

Geordie joe, PayPal are still wholly responsible for billing you, not eBay. It's a fairly simple pull through page that automatically signs you in to PayPal. PayPal will always set Bank Transfer as default, because it's the cheapest for them to process. Nothing to do with eBay.

Oh dear........Just had an email from ebay explaining exactly where the option is to change your payment method via paypal.

So I made another small purchase to test it and the option wasn't there. I checked several times and re-read the email half a dozen times but the option was not there. So naturally I replied to ebay and told the woman to go to specsavers.

Then I noticed my script blocker is blocking one new script on ebay. I just know it's going to be the script that gives you the option to change your payment method!!!!

Well if the woman who emailed me is right and there is an option to change which method you pay by via paypal then ebay must send the payment method to paypal, so it's ebay's fault.

If it was paypal that decided which method of payment to use then there would be no point in ebay asking you which method you want to use.

It's called an API. Effectively, it's a bit of PayPal's website shown within another website, so eBay have no clue what payment method you select, as you're effectively putting that bit directly into PayPal, just not on a webpage managed by PayPal. That means it works exactly as PayPal usually does, with the standard default payment method being bank transfer, and an option to change payment method.

Are you using a tablet or phone, OP? There have been threads before where people have reported problems that they have not experienced on PCs.

The new page is a right pain in the bum.

It 'tricked' me into paying by direct debit a couple of times, something I never do by choice.

Keeping an eye on it, it seems random if and when I get it.
