Credit card declined

Hi I applied for a credit card with Nationwide and it was decline.I checked with experian who they use and the only -ve thing on my report is one late payment which is in the process of being removed.Anyone any idea how it could have been declined.I have other credit card but wanted this one as going on hols to States and want one with no charges.I have aslo tried to appeal the decision but keep getting passed from pillar to post
