Slow running macbook pro

I was wondering if any of you lovely people could help me? In the last week or so my macbook pro has been running VERY slowly and buffers (spinning rainbow colored wheel) every couple of minutes. I added some CDs into the music folder of my itunes account last week and assumed it must have been that making it run slowly.…

Updates won't speed it up.

Does for me. A fresh install especially - definitely worth trying since the OS is so old. An SSD of course will be faster but I bet we're talking about a bogged down (software wise) computer. Or a failing hard drive. But let's do the easy stuff first - there's no reason the OP shouldn't be using 10.10. Updates are easy enough, but will obviously take a good while.
