You can check that the insurance is valid by looking up the registration number on the certificate on the askMID web site (while they are looking around the car).

All that the askMID website will show is if there is an insurance policy in place for a vehicle. It won't show if anyone named on that policy has any cover for driving other vehicles.

I privately sold a Honda Accord through autotrader a few years back, and i was in the position of only accepting payment while stood in my local branch. I didnt put it in the ad, but mostly when people called they would ask about payment. I had a number of calls offering cash but the call would mysteriously get cut off when i said cash was fine providing we had it all checked at the bank when paid into my account first.
The guy that ended up buying the car banked with the same bank as me, so we met at his local branch and the bank sorted it all out, we both got receipts and so were able to signed the car over and hand the keys over while there.

About as scintillating and compelling in the advertisement as, "genuine reason for sale". By all means get your intentions in order that you can discuss with a serious buyer, but anything that is a barrier to a potential customer you leave out. There's plenty more to see than the one from paranoid guy with anxiety issues.
  • Thanks all, based on the above I'll leave any extra wording out of the ad but mention it if/when someone is serious about buying. It seems there's a split of people who think it's weird and those who think it's acceptable so I'd rather risk offending a potential buyer who'll back out thinking I'm nuts rather than losing 4k!

PS colino, I don't have anxiety issues - just never sold a car privately before (unless you count a banger on ebay!) and 4k is a lot of money to lose so asking what was the norm really

Thrid Party cover for driving other cars will only cover any damage to the other pary in an accident. It will not cover any damage to your car.

I know, I was thinking more along the lines of the offence of permitting an uninsured driver...

What happens when they crash your car on the test drive? They aren't liable to pay for your repairs because you let them drive it knowing full well your insurance wouldn't cover it.
  • You will know if the buyer is genuine, I have test drove loads of cars and bought privately lots of times and no one ever asked for insurance docs, then again most of the cars were sub £1500.

An unlikely scenario I hope, pretty much any private seller selling their car will have to take this risk. If the test-driver was unfortunate enough to crash and refused to pay for the damage I'd have to take them to the small claims, but that's not something I'm worried about.

I want to know they're insured to drive my car third party (using the driving other cars extension that is sometimes on fully comp policies) so that I'm not permitting an unisured driver, that was the point of my Q about whether it's reasonable to ask to see their insurance certificate.
