Ref. Davemorton and Hintza replies, I've just come across the knock on of having a windscreen (FREE) repair. Although my NCD was not effected, each year for five years my policy has been loaded with an "at fault claim" (Insurance company unable to claim the repair cost from any other individual). So if the job is repairable, then getting it done by an independent without claiming off your insurance would be in my opinion, the way to go.
