Help Ins company error charging me - desperate please

Please help... my insurance company for house hold contents have just discovered at my time of renewal that the previous years payments for insurance did not go through, they have said I now have to pay for last years insurance and this years insurance. I have checked with my bank it seems that they took off one payment and then failed to take any more. The debit is active and the error is on the side of the insurance company who for some reason did not take any payments. I don't feel that its fair I am made to pay for their error,....also had I phoned to make a claim year I do believe they would have said that cos they hadn't received payment I wasn't covered. they are argueing I have had free insurance cover for the year and I must pay despite it being their error. Does anyone know where I stand with this please I really cannot afford to pay this. Desperate for help pretty please

You have to pay as far as I am concerned. Did you not notice the payments not coming out. Can they just double your payments per month so it's paid over the year?

You have had the cover so you owe the money. If you made a mistake and paid too much money I'm sure that you would expect them to refund you even though it was your mistake.

I disagree. I think a claim would have been met after the missed premiums had been made up from the claim proceeds.

You can stay with your existing insurer and come to some arrangement over the missed premiums; or move elsewhere and try to wriggle your way out of paying for the time that was missed.

I don't know about you or anyone else, but I'd know within a day if a direct debit hadn't been paid. For whatever reason.

You have had the benefit of the money and the interest on that money.

Surely you noticed you were not paying it? Is your financial management really that bad or did you think you would get away with it?
also had I phoned to make a claim year I do believe they would have said that cos they hadn't received payment I wasn't covered.

That is incorrect. You would have been covered. Payment and the policy being inforce are two separate things. Things like this have happened before and the insurer remains liable.

You owe them the money. However, they cannot demand a single payment if you cannot afford it. They have to agree a payment plan and it typically be no longer than the period of the error.
