Trying to close Barclays Business Account.

Hi there,

Last September I wrote to Barclays to inform them that I wanted to close my sole trader business account with themselves. The company had run out of money so it was the only outcome. There is an overdraft on the account of nearly 9K.

I am writing this today because nearly a year later nothing has been sorted. I have made two complaints to which nothing has been resolved and I have now spoken to the ombudsman who is sending me the forms to register with themselves.

Barclays keep on telling me since November last year that there is a problem with their system and they are unable to move my account on the relevant department. They are also not giving me a deadline as to when this problem will be resolved.

I have made Barclays an offer to clear the overdraft which they are unable to tell me if they can accept or not.

I was wondering if there is anyone else out there that are having the same problems as me and if anyone has some advice that would be great.

Also is there a time period that Barclays have to deal with this matter? Their advice to me today was to speak to the ombudsman as there is nothing they can currently do.

Many Thanks

A.

Surely you need to repay the overdraft (either in full or by agreed settlement) before looking to close the account?
  • Yes, but I'm unable to come to a settlement as they wont discuss anything with them until their system is back up and running.

I'm not sure I'm following this - they're under no obligation to accept a partial payment on your £9K debt so that's not grounds for a complaint, and equally not closing an account that's heavily overdrawn is also what you should expect.

Sounds like you've been given the runaround and some colourful excuses though, but what exactly is the basis of your complaints thus far and what has their final response to each been?
