PPI advice for a potential claim

After having a clear up I found some documents from Barclaycard after I cancelled a couple of ppi products with them a number of years ago. I've downloaded the pdf documents as I'm going to submit a claim, however the problem I have is I have a severe problem with my memory.
So many of the questions on the forms require dates, income amounts and expenditures from over 10 years ago. Plus the two products I had were for different credit cards that were taken under Barclays wing at later dates and I can't recall what the original companies were, though Marbles and Goldfish spring to mind.
If I genuinely can't remember the answers do I stand a much greater chance of being rejected?
Do I have to use the official claim forms?
Should I even bother if most of the boxes say "don't know"?
Many thanks for any advice offered.

You can fill in the template letter from this site. It is always worth a go. From what I have read the time frame varies on right to reclaim policies that were missold.Tv and newspaper adverts for claim companies allege that they have made successful claims as far back as 1997. But I have been told that 2005 seems to be the furthest time for legislation. Do not use a third party though. just fill in the template from here and the company will reply, they have 8 weeks to give you a reply. good luck.

No. In fact, making things up and getting them wildly wrong stands more chance of being rejected. You are not expected to have perfect recollection.
Do be aware that things you cant remember tend to be the conversations etc and these carry little or no weight as they are usually unprovable and poor recollection. Whereas factual information is usually much more important and easier to remember or prove.Do I have to use the official claim forms?
no but it makes sense to do so.Should I even bother if most of the boxes say "don't know"?
Depends on what your reasons for complaint are. Do you have a genuine complaint or are you fishing?. People have been successful in some cases going back to the 80s. The Jan 2005 date is when regulation started and tends to only apply to car dealers, brokers, advisers and some retailers. It does not apply to firms (such as the banks) who were members of an earlier body.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
