Drastic fox action needed

I have posted before but things have taken a turn and now need drastic action. A family of foxes live in my neighbours garden which, the neighbours are very elderly, resembles a jungle. That is ok so long as the foxes stay there but this summer a young cub took to sunbathing in my garden.

Now a fox, maybe the same one, marks my concrete front step and my concrete back door step, on an almost daily basis. This morning I looked out of my kitchen window and into my shed which is attached to the house, and through the window, I saw a fox sitting in there. It looks like the same cub from the summer. Normally the foxes are gone by late summer but obviously not so in this case. So much for each fox having a large territory of its own (there is another one living in the garden opposite and we are in an urban area.)

I really do not want to step out of my house onto fox poo on a daily basis or have one living in my shed (I imagine it squeezed in under the door gap as the shed is built on concrete.)

Any suggestions? I am thinking of buying a coil of barbed wire from Wickes to put round the shed door.

I would suggest that it would be more effective to fix the gap in the door that you mentioned.

Won't the barbed wire hinder your access to the shed too?

Door gap is needed to open shed door since new kitchen window was installed - new shed planned for near future but need solution in meantime. Will probably have to move main tools into the conservatory meantime.

Am also thinking of hiring "humane" fox removal team - to trap it.
  • I love seeing foxes in the garden but obviously not everybody's cup of tea. If you google "FOX DETERRENT" there are loads of things to try.

Unfortunately for me a lot of the advice given by "Fox" advisors, seems to be based on rural foxes and not the ones in town. Our foxes round here for example, wander about all day, not just at night and seem happy to live around 25 yards apart. The poo that my local fox has left is quite literally on my back and front door steps so I should imagine the fox would wander indoors if I left the back door open. There is no leftover food in my garden or anywhere near so wherever they are getting fed it is not from me.

The other recommendation is Scoot Foxoff which I have tried without success - apparently it only works if you apply it daily for weeks and then it still may not. I really do not understand why people who say they like foxes do not object to having their gardens dug up and marked, as it seems to me if they come into your garden regularly this is inevitable. Also they carry lice and ticks which will get onto your lawn if as my fox does, they sleep on it in the afternoons. With only a small town garden, this is a big problem.

Has anyone had one humanely trapped and removed from their garden? Any idea how much it costs?

Up to about £100 it seems... http://stores.ebay.co.uk/gdktrading/Fox-Traps-/_i.html?_fsub=554946719

    Do your own removal.

    Can be cheaper... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSN78d6-218
  • I have the same problem with foxes living in next door neighbour's 'jungle'! ive tried Scoot which us useless and also have a deterring high pitch sound and bright light thingy pointed at their point of entry although this is also pretty useless.

I'm afraid to say these !!!!!!s are just too cocky for their own good.. Granted ours dont fowl on the back step but they are close to the back door.

House next door is finally up for sale so hopefully new owners will set the garden ablaze and start over.

If you think of anything else that works do let us know!

You need to be extremely carful with foxes, and even more so if you have children around. A door or window left open could allow one into your home... Urban foxes are quite cocky gits and are not easily startled or scared of humans.

I would consider speaking with the council about the situation first.

An ultrasonic device may help deter them from entering your garden, and a cheap solution to try. It wont solve the fuller problem of them living in your neighbours garden, but may buy you some time and getting it to stop leaving deposits on your door step! Mine worked for neighbours cats but can take some time for them to get the message. The setting must also be set at the right pitch of tone so may take a few tweaks for it to work.
