New jsa joint claim with kids, do both have to attend?

It says if it's a joint claim both have to attend, but kids are off school and my wife has a little baby, can I request only I attend?

You request attending at different dates/times so one of you is at home looking after the little one.

  • Oh really, are you sure someone else told me you are wrong about that.

If a wife has a new born baby she doesn't have to attend?

Can somebody who really knows confirm who is correct?

It's just an ID check to confirm she is who she says she is it should only take a few minutes only one of you has to meet the conditions of the benefit that you are claiming. If you've got a friend who can mind the baby outside the Jobcentre whilst you are in the Jobcentre it will make it so much easier.

  • It's not just a baby though, we have two other kids who still have a few days before go back to school.
  • But thanks happymj, it's just an ID check, so perhaps we can all go in and then she can take the kids home, would that work?

Why don't you ring the Jobcentre and ask them? If they are saying you both must attend then work with them not against them. They can be very helpful but you've got to do everything they ask even if it's very inconvenient or your friends partners got away with not attending. Fight them by quoting stuff to them and they will make it more difficult for you in the future.

I've had plenty of dealings with Jobcentre and every time they are nice with me but my friends go in with a different attitude and they get a much poorer result in the end.

Explain that at the beginning and I don't see that as a problem but kids can't go in Jobcentre so leave them outside whilst you go in first.

Pertinent to this question, I think!

When do people have to make a joint claim and when do people make a claim for JSA and then add on their partner?

Is this governed by having dependent children or are there exceptions to having to fulfil job seeking requirements if you have a child of a certain age?

Can't find any information on this.

You both have to go, and don't worry about taking baby, there's always kids in our job center.
  • I also would like to know the answer.

I think that a child under 1 yr old then one parent does not have to live up to the jobseekers agreement.

But please correct me if I am wrong.

As I understand it its always a joint claim its just the requirement to seek work that differs for those with a child under 5 etc.
