Which is best budget DVI graphics card to use with my new DVI TFT?

Hi all,

I'v finally settled on a new 17inch Hyundai TFT monitor with 8ms repsonse time , 700:1 contrast ratio and DVI!

I now basically want a graphics card to take advantage of the DVI facility on the monitor without spending a fortune.

I don't want a fantastic graphics card as I don't do gaming etc.

I simply want a good value for money graphics which will allow me to use the DVI on the TFT and nothing more.

I have a Dell Dimension 3000 and would like a card which is known to work without any problems on this model machine.

I don't know how much a basic DVI graphics card costs but ideally I don't want to spend more than £60 or £70 if possible...

As I have no idea about graphics cards and reputation of card maufacturers I would really appreciate the help of you knowledgable people here!

Thanks very much in advance!

There's plenty of options, and it's not problem finding a card under £60.

Firstly, do you have an AGP or PCI-Express slot on your motherboard. I'd guess you have an AGP slot.

You can find graphics cards with DVI output from around £30. I'd go a little more up market than that. Maybe an ATI Radeon 9550. It comes in 128mb and 256mb form for about £45 and £50 respectively. Have a look on Microdirect, their prices are very reasonable.

My Dell manual says it has 3 PCI slots only.

    No mention of AGP

Ah. Ok, you'll need to look where your monitor connects into your computer. Is it a seperate card? You may have inbuilt graphics, in which case you'll have hit a snag.

    DON'T get a PCI-E (PCI-Express) card, it's a different slot from standard PCI slots.

You'll need to look into the spec of your machine more. If it is inbuilt graphics you'll have to get a PCI graphics card, in which case I don't know of any PCI graphics cards with DVI.
