Carpet type car mats. What to buy?

I have bought enough car mats over the years to know that the drivers side always looks worn out after a few thousand miles thus making a nice car interior look shabby.

There are lots of UK car mat companies selling tailored fit mats with a selection of piles rated in grams or grams per sqm. Some come with extra heel protection in optional rubber or double thick carpet while some don't as they claim some of their mats for sale are too thick to need them.

Can anyone recommend a good third party supplier of custom wool type mats and maybe the gram rating of that mat that will just need a clean to keep them looking new and last more than a few thousand miles?

Well it is a genuine question. Car mats are made from all sorts of carpet type material which all look great on day one. I want something that doesn't look clapped out after just 12 months after it has been cleaned.

It maybe a genuine question, but it does prompt get so and so's mats they are the best and ignore all others.
All I can say in my experience of cars is that the 2000 era Saabs and Mercs, BMWs have great OEM mats that last and last without getting heel marks and premature wear, even though I have a VW, their mats are not the greatest.
  • Stick to thick rubber ones, easy to clean and will last.
  • Get the rubber ones. You can then pull them out and hose them down whenever you want and they'll be as good as new.

The last few cars I've had, the (rubber) mats came from the main dealer, were hardly any more expensive than from elsewhere and lasted almost 10 years.

Another vote for rubber mats, plus they won't smell or give condensation when wet

Original manufacturer OEM mats are the safest and long lasting.... Plenty for sale brand new on eBay. The mats for my Vectra cost me about £30 and whilst they need a hoover, they've lasted 60'000 miles and they haven't moved an inch, thanks to being made for the specific car.

Best advice yet, buy cheap buy twice, get the proper ones which are shaped to fit and actually clamp down to stop them going under the pedals!.

If your car has hooks for the original floor mats, buy ones with the hole so they can be hooked on to stop them slipping. I buy rubber ones as they last a long time, don't stay damp and are easy to clean. My current ones were approx. £25 from ebay, the proper fit for the car and edged in pink fabric - lovely!
