Car tax

I used to have free disabled car tax, now in their wisdom & despite a deterioration in health, my mobility has been changed to lower in PIP. I am trying to retax the car while my appeal is considered, but I can't find out where to go to do it.
I have been on line & it says my car is taxed until next year, but to cover ourselves I wanted to retax.

Can anyone help?

Could try calling DVLA and asking.

As you were previously on enhanced mobility you did not need to pay the tax. Now that you have been downmoted to standard rate, you are only entitled to a 50% reduction.
If your car is free tax at the moment, you should tell the DVLA of this change and you will have to pay the new rate. DVLA is your contact point for this.
The car should not be used from the date you were awarded the new PIP rate until you have paid the correct amount of tax.

Go to any post office that does vehicle tax with your full V5 and MOT (and insurance if in NI). They will know what to do, tax it, set up DD if req'd and send the V5 off.

Do as I did, and tax your car with the stated benefit. Then claim back the the residue of the tax paid, when you get the higher rate.
  • Thank you I'll contact DVLA in the morning, neither of us would dream of using an untaxed car that is why I asked for advise.
I would go to post office, but our local one has closed & neither of us are mobile at the moment, hence the need to tax the car.

    Thanks once again.

IF you get the higher rate.

There are two things that are certain in life - Taxes and Death.
PIP or indeed any benefit is NOT one of them.
  • OK just got throughout to the DVLA started at 8.20 this morning now it is 11.30, they just cut you off when they are busy, Goodbye.....gone.
However I did get through & the lady was very helpful. I have not been given the 50% rate, so just take to the post office with the relevant paperwork & the car will be ready to five.
    Thanks everyone.
  • I really hope I do, the ATOS woman was dreadful. I had a friend with me as I suffer with memory loss, what was the point when she wasn't allowed to speak.

Unfortunately these assessments rely on the claimant giving a first hand account.
If it became allowable to have a third party deal with the questions, people would be having welfare rights officers attend with them asking that they be allowed to deal with everything instead of the claimant. Even with some memory loss, it should be a piece of cake to get the assessor to ask the questions and put down whatever you replied. They don't actually write down what you say exactly, just their interpretation of what they think they heard.

It's a shame that these assessments aren't carried out under the Perjury Act. You give the answers, they write down what you said, you read it all back at the end and then sign each sheet as a true record of the assessment. It would solve a lot of problems (and appeals)
