Sky Call Protect

My Sky multiroom box has been playing up over the last few months and now crashes constantly. I have done all the rebuilds etc and it just keeps happening, I think it is a physical problem with the hard drive so I need a new box.

I was going to book an engineer's appointment but see there is an option to take six months of Sky Call Protect for £60 as opposed to the one off fee of £65 for the visit. This covers you for 6 months against three months warranty on a refurbished box.

Has anyone done this? I don't want to sign up to anything that will tie me in for 12 months but if I can get six months cover for slightly less than what three would cost I may as take it? Just cancel it after the 6 months.

  • Ring up Sky and tell them you wish to cancel as your box has failed and you can't afford to replace it.

They will, in all probability, give you a replacement box. At least they did with me when I used the same ploy.

  • Will they extend your contract? I don't want to be tied into anything at the moment.

They didn't with me. Try asking. You can refuse their offer if you are not happy with it and will have lost nothing.

Just phone to cancel ...tell them you think the box has died......they prob. will offer a free engineers visit and if it is your box he will fit a refurb -no extended contract. You have the power to refuse anything else -if they still try to charge or tie you in for a further period ,you can always look on Gumtree/Ebay for a 2nd hand box

Our local Cash Generator store in Kidderminster had at least half a dozen Sky HD+ boxes on sale last week for £25 each. Some still had the white cards with them.

  • You can buy a proper refurbished box from ebay for about £50, or (if lucky) you might get a second hand one for as low as £10 delivered. Gumtree sometimes has them for as low as £5. I'd go for one of these options if I were you.

After you get the new box, just plug it in and call Sky to tell them you have a new box. They will want a few details but will tell you exactly what to look for.
