House in Great Ashby v Flat in WGC

Before I met her, my DW started out with a place near Stevenage, but moved to WGC as soon as she was able to afford it. I'm sure there's some postcode snobbery at work here - who wants an SG prefix when you can have AL :-)
No idea what your budget is, but any sort of decent house close-ish to the station is probably going to be close to 300k.
Relatively speaking, there's good value to be had at the Stanborough end of Handside Lane - you wouldn't pay much different for a 3 bed there versus one closer to the hospital, and it's a far better part of town with a better primary school (which I'm sure will be a consideration at some point!).
But I may be telling you what you already know... so good luck!0 -
I know all about that snobbery - :rotfl:
Unfortunately our budget won't quite stretch to a 2 bed house in an area of choice. Hence choosing between an apartment in a brill location in WGC or a lovely house in GA that is a little less than convenient in regards to hubby's daily commute. If only GA had its own station! Having said that, it's a 10 min drive + paying for car park / 15 min cycle / 15 min bus away - but added on to the train journey already p, it's not ideal - albeit doable.
Decisions, eh. :j0 -

Hang on... you haven't visited them yet?
In that case, this discussion is premature. You may find that one (or both) of them is completely unsuitable (or you hate it).Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -
Benjus - you are absolutely correct. Viewing may make our minds up in regards to these specific properties. However, the decision between the two general types of properties and locations will continue to be the case.
We know both locations pretty well and have been looking at our affordability / the market for some time, so whether these particular properties or not, the decision will raise at some point!0 -

And you just wait till you do get on the WGC ladder, suddenly only AL8 'West Side' will do!!
As an alternative, have you looked at Hatfield at all? Yes there are some seriously grotty bits, but I have family/friends living there and there are some decent newer developments of 2 bed houses that were well priced last time I looked (to be fair that was a while ago). And you have the benefit of the station. Plus there are supposedly plans afoot to regenerate the town centre, which could make it a smart area to buy into...0 -
We haven't to be honest. We are open, however hubby and I are conscious about staying too near to the uni / student accom. We don't know Hatfield well at all. Do you know where the 'nicer' areas would be?0

There's a lot of newer development around the 'Garden Village', although that's the other side of the A1M so not so convenient for the station. Other than that, the south side of the town has a few little cul de sac developments off of roads like Travellers Lane - e.g. Allen Court and Kingsmill Court. I would just tend to avoid anything TOO close to the town centre!0

Thanks ratechaser - will keep an eye out0

Personally I'd keep my options open. For example, just because one flat isn't suitable doesn't mean that all flats aren't suitable.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

Thank Benjus. We are definitely keeping our options open. We are looking at apartments also in the surrounding Hertford, Broxbourne, Ware etc..0
