  • I love this thread although the list of things to do is getting rather long now :rotfl: I need to sit down & write a proper plan of action, the problem is every time I read this thread I find something else to do

  • young bean --- welcome to the boards - I'm sure with the help of this thread you will have your home heat proofed etc in no time at all. They are a cracking bunch of people on this thread. x

fed up and skint -- thanks for reminding me about the non perishable stuff - reminds me I need to look into buying some tupper ware tubs etc to keep rice/pasta/flour etc in.

welsh camper -- got to love the welsh weather hey - we are in a valley near Port Talbot with only 3 roads in and out of our village, one road is currently closed due to it subsiding so they are reinforcing it again now and it'll be closed for 18 months, one road towards town is prone to mudslides/landslides and flooding and the other road is completely in the wrong direction and adds an hour to a 10 minute journey. Best get stocking up!

seafarers_wife -- reminds me I must make an emergency car kits for boyfriend -- he uses the car back and forth to work. Think in our box I'll include de-icer, a window scraper, a fleece blanket, wind up torch (if I can find a cheap one) few bottles of water, a few nutrigrain bars, keeping my old phone charged but with £5 worth of credit on it and emergency contact numbers to keep in the boot so he has a way of contacting someone. Wondering if a cheap pair of jogging bottoms and a t shirt might be good idea to have in there too.

  • Seafarers wife, good post! Will you put a blanket in your car emergency box too?

I need to organise a shovel, sledge (pushchair no good in snow), provisions for car and home, screenwash....
:D Skint but happy with my lovely family :D

    Hypnotherapy rocks :j
  • sammy try and get a few pieces of old carpet too, to put under the wheels for traction if he gets stuck on snow or ice. :)

Hiya all :) hope your winter preparations are going well :) the weather here is absolutely amazing today so it's not a wintery day for once!

I have a new exciting thing to prepare for winter, my neighbours have just given me blinds for all of my windows in my house so that should keep some heat in! It was lovely of them to do that!

Also, Lidl is selling packs of wool for £2.49 and they include scarf packs, sock wool and normal wool too :) Hope this can help someone!

  • hi, i live on the edge of the brecon beacons so we get quite a bit of snow plus have to dig the elderly neighbours out and a metal shovel becomes heavy, and after last years now i need a lighter one!:(

i just looked on ebay and they go up in price form £8.99

I live a bit further north from you(Elan Valley)and had snow shovel last year from local hardware shop-about £7.50.Fantastic,bright red, plastic and very light, also clears a large area quite easily.
How sad to get excited about a shovel:D

Our craft group are just starting to make a patchwork quilt-don't think it will be ready for this winter tho'

    mrss

  • Sammy not looking too good! getting in and out of your village this winter if the snow comes, .. i thought ours was bad lol..we have 4 roads in but 3 are mountain roads and on one is a triangle sign with a snowflake warning of snow lol..i carry a shovel at all times because to get to my daughters school you have to use a mountain road which can fill up with snow quickly.. touch wood...never been stuck so far.

Mrssnowy couldnt get a snow shovel anywhere here last year, thats a really good price!..and im getting sooo excited about getting my shovel this week! lol

i think i'll be digging the bubblewrap out that i used on the door at the top of the stairs and the bathroom last year. it's decidely nippy tonight!

we also plan to go collect rosehips and possibly rowan berries if they are ripe enough tomorrow. i thought i'd try mixing the rosehip puree with this huge tub of applesauce i got from approved foods. i can smooth it out onto my no stick silicon mats i made for my food dehydrator and make fruit leathers with it.

i think we'll also try this with mixing in rowan berries with sweeter fruits (and adding some bicarb to reduce the aciditiy) so i'll let others know how we get on with that... with the prices of food likely to rise soon i think i should make a point to get the most out of foraging i can and i'm not so great with making jam (too sugary really anyway) so this seems a good compromise.

btw those thermal/blackout curtains i made have been great so far, they were time consuming to sew by hand but really worth it! which reminds me, soon it will be time to stuff the bedrooms windows warped wood gaps with paper again, oh joy :(
