Think I need a word with my OH about money saving. Ive been out working lots of extra shifts over christmas etc and leaving OH and kiddiwinks at home and thought I was doing really well with my gas and electric bills. So I had a request for a meter reading, I've just trundled off and done it rang swalec who told me they estimated me at £215 for the winter months (in a single glazed 2 bed flat) so thought oh still a bit high but thats good enough and should come down when I gave the reading.

'miss roberts your new bill from the accurate reading is......................................

Oh his dinner will be in the dog when he gets home! So now I have to pay £100 this month, £122 for the next 6 months and in August just after baby arrives it will drop down to £51!

SO is ours. We asked if it was a lot cheaper if we bought a ton and he said no its just the same !! Lots of people say its cheaper if you buy in bulk but ours isnt.
Ours gives us 5% disc if we pay for the whole lot up front in the summer, then can either have whole lot delivered or if not got enough room can have bags brought as and when and he stores it for you.

We have 2 coal bunkers so usually have whole lot delivered.
    My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).

  • We finished the coal and briquettes in the bunker yesterday, and there are 2 logs left there. So we have to buy everything again this weekend. Luckily, there was an offer on firelogs last weekend, so we have something if it';s cold during the week. But I am not impressed how much we've gone through (and that's despite me getting lots of cones and a good few stout sticks on my treks into lottie to add to that).

I am dreading the gas bill too, as although we now have a thermostat, it seemed to be on almost constantly all over Christmas when we used to have it on when it felt cold.

Oh well, at least it really was needed this year.....

Hi all , I have just invested in some thermal lined curtains for our patio doors to help save heat loss. This winter seens so long and cold. I have also attached Asda fleece blankets to the back of another set of curtains.
We are all trying to make our house's warm and save the pennies looking on MSE. Lots of good idea's.
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
    Spring begins on 21st March.

    Hi All

Might be on a bit of a heat saving mission today - bloody ridiculous gas bill - im about calm now. SO dug out and washed all the fleece blankets yesterday so they are ready to go - going to put one across our curtains, once across little man's and then the other on the other chair in the sofa. Benji has a bob the builder one on his bed as well as the quilt sideways and tucked under the edges so it cant fall off in the night, there's a ben 10 fleece one on the other sofa, and I have a bedspread im currently drying that will go on our bed once I've made it later. Put the small electric fan heater in our bedroom - the radiator has never worked and despite contacting the council like a million times about it it never seems to get fixed either. Much like the hole in the wall in the living room - its apparently a vent but when they resurfaced the roof they knocked the outside 'vent' off with a scaffolding pole and despite another load of phone calls still haven't come out to repair it!

    So
a)much nagging at council again today.
    b) fleece fitting
    c) freezer inventory as im sure there's stuff in there ive forgotten about.
    d) meal plan
    e) candles
    f) make sure the beds are made.

right ive just finished me porridge for the morning so am off now to see what else i can do.

Just had my gas bill too. Not a good year for gas bills I think. Made DH put his thermals on and resolved to utilise cooker better as well as switching heating off more when possible. I've been leaving it on very low, partly because he has had a nasty cold, and partly because he is working shifts, and I hadn't the heart to make him get up to a freezing cold house at 4.30 a.m. I have now - he'll have to freeze.
  • We've found an extra layer of clothing is very very effective in saving heating bills. We started wearing thermals and extra fleeces in the cold spell before christmas. Now the outside temperature is more normal we are finding the house is 'too hot' even when the temperature is 17 or 18 which is what we would have thought was 'cold' in our 'pre thermal' era !

I will be interested to see what out bills come out like for this quarter. I can never manage to calculate meter readings into hard cash.

I routinely wear, two pairs of socks + slippers. Thermal leggings + jeans, vest, t-shirt, jumper, fleece cardigan. with all that then an indoor temp of 15 or 16 degrees is fine even when I'm, not moving around very much, as I am off work longterm ill at the moment.
