I have been thinking about animals too,i have 4 outdoor rabbits and hutch covers are really expensive so im hoping to make my own as well as using some cheap fleece blankets to help insulate them.

    Shelley

When we had rabbits,in the winter we tacked sheets of 1 or 2 inch thick polystyrene sheets on the hutch and covered it neatly with roofing felt.
It used to come off easily in the spring and over winter kept the animals warm and the roofing felt made it loof ok.
It only takes a couple of hours to do and works well and does'nt cost much to do.

Think I better walk around the cottage and really look at what needs doing. Not having spent a winter here, I dont know what it will be like here. I expect it to be brrrr cold after having lived in the last house with kids, and the heating on all the time.
I saw fleeces in Prim@ark, but didnt have any money to spare at the time, so I will just have to think out side of the box and see what I do have!!
When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.

so looks like I still have a fair old way to go! Better get my backside into gear!

i wanted to say congrats on the baby sammy_kaye, i saw you mention it on another thread

looks like you'll have your own radiator by the time winter comes along! might i reccomend asking for baby things on freecycle now and throughout your pregnancy? i suspect you'll be able to get a fair bit of it totally free!

mooloo if you don't already belong to freecycle in your area do join, you'll probably be able to find a lot of things you need there though you may have to post wanted posts to get them. some people may even be willing to bring you things vs you collecting them if you ask nicely and have a good reason (i have no car so i miss out on a lot of things but i've had some lovely people offer to bring me things when i've asked about bus stops near them!)

even if you get ratty old blankets those could still go under the bed sheet or make door curtains or even a psuedo rug for in front of the sofa etc. plenty of other things you could ask for too and you'll be surprised what goes on offer, ours is quite active and i see tvs and even games consoles on their regularly!

i think one guy is kitting out a farm from what he's been asking for! but he seems to be doing ok so i say go for it! if it weren't for freecycle i wouldn't have any blankets duvets sheets or towels as i only found out that our FURNISHED house we rent didn't come with those about 2 days before i moved here! thankfully i had people queueing up to help me out it was such a relief and made me feel a bit better about our situation.

    Thanks confuzzled.

i already have a list of things to get for baby (i only found out yesterday too) and have been to the midwife this morning and the doctor. Am lucky I still have the old basinette top of Bens old pushchair which can be used as a moses basket in our room until baby is big enough for a cot and ben is still in his cot bed too so will re adapt that for when baby is big enough and get ben a proper bed. Hoping baby will be in the moses basket a while though so i can get the boys rooms sorted. Have put in for a hose swap too and going back on housing list as we are in a two bed flat and we have Owens other son on the weekend so need a bigger place i think.

Looking to do things as OS as possible so will be looking at reusable nappies, breast feeding and the like. Thinking basic clothes will be good too - as in not inundated with them like i was when i ad ben i had about 4 bin bags full of clothes and only realistically used about 20 of them

Only thing concerning me now though is by Christmas I should be about 6/7 months so will be at the stage where things start getting awkward so hoping to get a move on with heating/insulation plans before too long and then really crack on with Xmas preparations so I don't have to strain myself nearer the time.
    Time to find me again

    Congratulations sammy kaye

Natural central heating at the right time too

We recently had the loft and cavity walls insulated under the warm front scheme my advice would be apply as although we didn't quite qualify we still got it as our energy provider paid i am not sure how it worked really but it cost nothing and we now have free central heating cover

My list for winter quite small in comparison

buy flannelette sheets for all beds 1 double 2 singles
youngest ds needs a new dressing gown and welly boots
    all need slippers
buy me some thermals and welly boots

I'd love to see some photos of us all "wintered up" - There is part of me can't wait to get back in me Primy pajamas and cosy snuggly dressing gown and being in bed at 9 pm!

We are all like little animals or birds preparing our nests and burrows for a cold spell.

Well I finished the draught excluder for the front door. Used two sleeves from the shirt I had made into a cushion cover, and stuffed with cut up stockings.
Tomorrow I have to go back to making a prototype cravat for a wedding coming up. I have 4 to make. But it will give me a little pin money if I can make them.

  • I have made some draught excluders using old thick tights stuffed with some of the huge amount of carrier bags that I have accumulated.
