Thanks for the curtain suggestions guys, I hadn't even thought about a charity shop, will do the rounds this weekend!
Will check out Roseby and HalfCost as well, thanks heaps!!0 -
I need some long curtains - ours are the basic plain white ikea curtains - brought on the cheap so we had curtains up there job and the curtain rail sticks out too far so there is about a 4inch gap round the side and top of window and they are about 2 inches two short. so hoping if i can find long enough curtains if i could get a strip of velcro down the side fo the window that would pull it to the wall adn stop and heat escaping. worth a try i guess. would also be nice if they were a deep red colour or white as it would go with the decor and id keep them up all year round then!:money: !Time to find me again0

Don't know if anyone else has mentioned them but I get most of my curtains from T J Hughes. Think they are mainly NW England & Midlands. HTHNothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task. William James0

Hiya I got mine from Mr T's and it worked out £10 for a top and leggings. They go up to x large in my store, for something a little bigger Millets are usually pretty good (especially in the sales) and generous sizes and we have a brilliant workwear shop down the road which also stocks them in different sizes at a reasonable price
* I have visions of all these lovely ladies sitting wrapped up snugly in duvet boots, thermals and bobble hats..or maybe thats just me*

Does anyone know how effective metal slatted venetian blinds are at keeping heat in? We always close ours with the underneath side of the slat facing inwards so that any heat would be deflected inwards rather than outwards (in theory at least).
We have 3 yr old upvc sealed unit windows with K glass, and we always shut our blinds at dusk, leaving the curtains open (mainly as they are floor length and would block the heat from the radiators if we closed them).
Would shorter curtains, tucked behind the rads be much more efficient than just closing the blinds?
Thanks!0 -
Hi All
philgee - I have found that the venetian blinds really don't keep much heat in, but they must do a little... I have now put up HM blinds lined with SmartPrice (1.77) fleece blankets and its made such a difference !
Also have put long lined (not thermal) curtains at front and back door - have hardly needed the heating on so far this year - just for a few minutes at a time to take the chill off.
I have never had that before - am usually freeeeeeeeeeeeeeezing by this time of year and its on 24/7 !
RE LAPQUILTS...... does anyone have a photo or 'very' detailed instructions please - I sort of get the ones that have been posted before, but could do with an 'Idiots Guide' please
We simply cannot afford to have it on that much this year plus I begrudge paying out so much for fuel so am getting to be a right tightar$£!!!
BTW - If you have (or can afford to buy, new or secondhand) an exercise bike, or even better a Cross Trainer then you will never be cold again and might lose a lb or two into the bargain!!!!!!! I found a good XT on amazon for £49.99 new.
Each time I feel a bit chilly I hop on the CrossT for 5 mins and I am toasty again - I forget that the wee ones cannot use it yet so fling an extra layer on them0 -
also, anyone know where I can buy proper leggings (that don't stop below my knees!) cos I don't really like the flowery wooly patterns on thermals (thanks for posts re Primark and Tescos, checked Primark, local tescos don't have them yet. May check Aldis).
Aldi's thermal set (£7.99 for long sleeve top and leggings) looks really good, they have a choice of white and black, and the black ones are just like regular leggings, you could easily wear them with a skirt and boots. I got both the white and black set and thinking of going back for another two sets!

CaterinaFinally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
I bought a set of each - I'm rather tall so bought the Large Men's sets, only to discover that some kind person had stuffed the Large box with Medium Ladies sets .... grrrrrrr. Now I am the proud owner of some rather short long johns! If you see me on here - shout at me to get off and go and get something useful done!!0
