I'm planning to go and buy a car (using my credit card) for my girlfriend.
I want to then give the car to her.
    So how does this work?
I sign the logbook at the dealership, send it off to DVLA - so I am the registered keeper and owner. I will add it to my insurance and drive it home.

Then how do I transfer it to my girlfriend, before the logbook comes back to me from the DVLA?
Can my girlfriend arrange insurance and drive the car before the logbook comes back from the DVLA?

My girlfriend has no credit card and can't get time off to go and pick the car up.

I would like to use the added consumer protection that comes with a credit card purchase.

    Thanks for any advice

Just fill in the V5 with her details. Easy.

You also need to tax the vehicle before you drive away from the dealer, using the 12 digit document reference number in section 10 of the V5.

I've bought cars for both my sons in the last three years without them knowing. Explain what you are doing to the dealer. No problem.

She can be the registered keeper without being the legal owner. If this is a newer vehicle, you're going to instantly reduce the value by making her the second registered keeper.
However insurance may be more complex if the reg keeper is not also the legal owner.

Have you spoken to the dealer? Unlikely that they'll accept payment for entire car on credit card without additional charges. They may accept deposit. Guess it depends on value of car
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

So I'll need to find wifi or use my mobile internet to tax the car before I leave the dealership..?
Unless I can use dealership PC. This is a new tax procedure since I bought my car...

Girlfriend will be the legal owner, but I was planning to change her to the legal owner once I'd brought the car home.

So I can fill in V5C with girlfriend's details and send it off to DVLA without her signing it?
That means I'll be driving her vehicle home on my insurance?

Dealer seems ok with credit card payment for whole car value just under 2k

Check you're not paying a 2.5% or similar percentage surcharge for using a credit card.

Regarding the extra protection (Section 75) via a credit card, this only applies if there's a clear debtor-creditor-supplier link.

If the dealer's receipt isn't in your name (even if you've paid for it) then Section 75 won't apply.

I'd arrange an independent inspection of the vehicle at a local garage for peace of mind and so you're aware of any issues. It shouldn't cost more than an hour's labour (£40-50). At that price point you can't expect a dealer to provide a vehicle that is as new.

Yes, you'll need to obtain tax on site. Just do it on your smartphone (assuming you have one). Perfectly feasible.

If you have a VISA debit card and have the funds available, then you will also have the same s.75 protection, but without the extra charges applied.
    Never Knowingly Understood.

I didn't know that, I paid for my car on visa debit card but the deposit was with a CC.
