Old CCJ

My granddaughter & her partner are in the throes of renting a flat but need a guarantor as she isn't 21 until January, & my hubby has said he would do this for her, but on the forms it asks if there have been any CCJ's, we had one over 20years ago, will this still show up on credit checks ? & do we need to declare it after so long. Also once she is 21, can hubby be removed as guarantor, or does he have to remain for length of the lease.

If the landlord/letting agent does a credit search on your husband it won't show a CCJ that old; it will have dropped of his credit file 6 years after it was issued. If the question isn't time specific then answering 'No' could be considered fraudulent but 20 years on it would be very easy to say that it was so long ago you had forgotten you ever had it (assuming anyone ever found out).
Not sure about remaining as guarantor but even when she hits 21 I'd like to bet that the landlord/lettting agent would prefer a guarantor so may be reluctant to remove him until a new lease is agreed. I think that is something to discuss with the landlore/letting agent direct before signing anything. If they do say it is OK to be removed as guarantor once she hits 21 make sure to get it in writing and then make sure it actually happens.0 -
I agree about the CCJ. After six years it is no longer recorded and there is no way anyone will find out about it unless you tell them. These things are not supposed to hand around your neck forever.0
