Are they the cheapest on moneysupermarket. If not go with new company. There is loyalty with insurance companies.

Why would you want to reward them by giving them another penny, let alone £490?

Call them and tell them about the lower quotation. Seems eminently reasonable to expect them to go for it. Unfortunately many insurance companies try to sneak in big increases when it comes to renewal time, hoping that the customer won't notice. I don't mind a 5 percent increase but if it's a big one I consult the Meercat and go elsewhere, then tell the previous company that I'm not renewing with them. I won't spend time haggling with them.

They may well match the online price when you call them up. If they don't, you can still tell them where to stick their renewal on the phone, then go back online and buy the policy at the online price.only downside of doing it that way is that you might end up having to send them their own renewal letter as proof of no claims discount (if they ask for proof of NCD don't assume that you don't have to send it unless you want them to cancel the policy - that would be putting far too much faith in the ability of the different departments to talk to each other).

They don't always ask to see it, but if they do you have to send it. if you phone them you might be able to get them to confirm it from their own system instead, but in that case ask them to confirm that they don't need to see the paper copy. What you must not do is do nothing and simply assume that they'll check themselves.

Your renewal notice should state how many years NCD you have. Generally it will be the amount you had when you started the policy plus the number of years the policy has been running, assuming you've been claim free that all that time.

If £490 is the best value he can find, why not? Choosing a more expensive policy from another company out of some misguided sense of principle is just cutting off his nose to spite his face, especially as that other company will have exactly the policy and will also charge renewing customers more than new customers.

If posting the NCD is issue accept their £1200 renewal and save 63p. :D
