Think the Tech tread is the best place to post his TV question

I have my renovations almost completed and I'm on the look out for a new television. The Samszung UE40JU6400 is a Which? Best Buy. Part of their review states: 'You get an impressive four HDMI ports and three USB sockets. You can add USB storage to use the TV as a PVR to record and pause live programmes. Oddly, there's no Scart socket on the TV and you can't use an adapter. If you want to use an older device, such as a VHS player, you can do so via the Component and CVBS output if you buy an adapter.'

That bit about there been no Scart socket confuses me. Do TV's not need Scart sockets now. I have a DVD player, which to be honest I seldom use and a Humax HD recorder. I wouldn't like to think that any of them would be rendered redundant!

One more question, if I might. The review also states 'You can add USB storage to use the TV as a PVR to record and pause live programmes. ' I've come across this with other televisions but I'm not to sure what it means. Does it mean that I can use the likes of an external hard drive that you'd use for a computer or does it refer to a HD box like my Humax?

Bottom line, I'm not interested in an all signing, all dancing TV, I want a decent TV, at a reasonable price, and at this point in time I'd want a smart TV. I assume a smart TV will mean that I will no longer require my Chromecast dongle?

As always many thanks for your advice

Kevin

scart has been superseded with hdmi, so if you're kit has hdmi as all modern dvd players and pvr's will, it's not going to be a problem

usb recording means plugging in a hard disk or flash drive

read the smart tv specs to decide if it meets your needs or not, some samsung's don't even have a working iplayer app yet
Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand

Are we talking an ordinary hard drive like a computers external HD and are we talking an ordinary Flash Drive again like you'd use on a computer?

Both are the "same" in this case, but the Sammys want to format it for its own use, and it is not as if you can easily use it elsewhere(in my experience) i.e. your PC to watch the recorded stuff, even using linux. In fact having recorded a program on my Kitchen TV(sammy) and plugged in the USB flash drive into my Lounge TV(sammy) the lounge one will not play it....both of them are "H" series.

Check what outputs these have. They're likely to have more than just scart.
  • Im interested to get into connecting a hard drive to record from a tv, how do you know if your tv is capable? I have 3 samsungs, 1 is a 2011 model, one is 2012 model and one the latest 22 inch LED full hd 2015 version. I have ordered a 512gb flash drive to use as solely recording tv, will this work? How do you time recordings onto the flashdrive?

Adding a USB drive (flash or HDD) to a TV is not a good solution unless you're a very light user. You're almost definitely still stuck with only one tuner (so you're watching what you're recording) and the user interface isn't always great. A PVR plugged into HDMI is a much better solution and if you're thinking 'not another remote' you can get them with remotes you can programme to control your TV.
  • Yeah I understand that, I am quite a light user, would just like the functionality to record off our UE22H5610 in the loft and then plug and play recordings from hard drive into our UE40E5300 in the living room and UE26EH4500 in the bedroom.

It looks like my 250gb laptop hard drive in enclosure works perfect with the new UE22H5610 in the loft to record, but when i go and plug it into the UE26EH4500 and UE40E5300, although the hard drive is recognised by usb it wont let me play the recorded tv! frustrating. Any work around this in terms of formatting etc? Maybe get a new hard drive to recrod directly from my UE26EH4500 and UE40E5300 are, they even possible to record from? When I press the record button on the remote it just says 'not available'
