  • Angel Delight is basically powdered potato and sugar, and it tastes lovely! My only concern would be that a cake made with potato would probably need quite a lot of sugar to cover up the potato taste.

  • oh i have heard of lots of people that use 1 or 2 spoonfuls (tablespoons) of mash potato in there cakes any cake for that matter to make it a more moist cake. Though i have been meaning to try it for years but never got round to it we all love mash pots in this house do i never have any left over to put in the cake lol.

  • I've never heard of using mash in cake before but was watching 'Cook yourself thin' last week and they had a recipie for chocolate cake with beetroot as the main ingredient - it looked surprisingly tasty. I think it was channel 4 so they'll probably have the recipie on their site if you're feeling a bit experimental!

  • oo i just found this in a write up while on my travels around the web
In the late 1940s, my mother and her friends formed what they referred to loosely as a sewing club. They gathered monthly, in the evening, for conversation, any creative handwork they happened to be doing, and, of course, refreshments. I recall the evenings the sewing club met at our house: the neighborhood gossip, one serious knitter busy with needles clicking away, and the dessert dishes of Mama's famous potato cake. A dark chocolate loaf cake, its dense moistness came from the cold mashed potatoes mixed into the batter. The finished cake, dusted with a veil of powdered sugar and resting on a white doily, was rich and brownielike. Unfortunately, my mother's recipe died with her, and I never learned it. If any of you - my dear readers - come across a chocolate cake recipe that uses mashed potatoes, please send it in!

So could you substitute 'smash' powder for some of the flour, or even Angel Delight (in any flavour)?

I´m just curious to know, don´t suppose I´ll be brave enough to try it

I made a slimming world recipe cake with cocoa and chickpeas. They were raving about it on Ivillage diet forum. I have never tasted anything so utterly gross in my life, even thinking about it makes me retch!!!

Waste of ingredients and time in my opinion of course!:D

I've made some really nice double choc chews from the fatfree.com website. My boys really enjoyed them until I said that they'd just eaten prune puree and soft cheese!:rotfl:

I've got a lovely recipe for Chocolate Mayonnaise cake; made with a jar of mayo rather than eggs and fat. It's scrummy and nobody ever believes what it's made from!
