chocolate cake with mashed potato in

Options
Yeah, I know gross, but my Mum tells me my Nan Nan used to make it during the war and it made a really squidy cake and helped it keep.

Anyone hear of this before, any recipes??

I was reminded of this because of that 'Cook yourself thin' show where one of the ladies made a choc cake with beetroot in it (think I'll give it a miss though)

I've looked through all my wartime recipe books and can't find a chocolate cake with mashed potato but there's this recipe for a cake/pudding with mash in.

    12 oz hot mash
    a little flour
4-6 oz fat (dripping, lard, suet or butter)
    3 oz dried fruit
    2 oz sugar
    pinch of salt
    nutmeg

You just mix everything together adding the flour gradually to make a stiff dough. Bake in a greased cake tin in a low oven (140-150c)

To make it chocolate you could add some cocoa and leave out the dried fruit and nutmeg. I'm not sure this is the recip you have in mind though, it seems more like a potato pancake/scone than a cake.

By the way beetroot is very good in a cake -much like carrot ;)

I have seen a recipe for a chocolate cake with potato as an ingredient. It was in a potato and rice cookbook my mother had, and I brought it into my Home Economics class because they didn't believe me!

    Try this one:

I make cinnamon buns with mashed potato in in my Fastbake bread maker. It's a traditional recipe from the cookbook author's grandmother.

They are absolutely yummy and come out lovely every time.

If you have a bread maker, I'll post you the recipe if you fancy it (but beware if you are on a diet!! :rotfl: ) If you don't have a bread maker, then you can still make them, although you'll need to knead well and let it rest for the yeast to rise etc.

My mum has got this recipe on a tea towel.

It is quite nice actually, I didn't realise for a long time that it had mashed potato in!
    .....

  • Thanks everyone - most informative a usual. I think I'll gie it a whirl when my mother comes to visit.

I don't suppose I could make it as well as my Nan Nan. She was awesome - and she really could make a little go a long way.

Oh I like that first link Moanymoany ;) I notice all those recipes have 4 eggs each in them -so probably not British wartime recipes, but great finds :T
