Hi everyone,
Can anyone shed some light on the differences of the NUS cards, I'm rather confused. I'd like to purchase one of the NUS cards which will give me a discount at places like Topshop/Miss Selfridge etc. Is the NUS Extra suitable for this?
Also when trying to apply online they don't list my uni, does this mean I have to wait until I actually start uni and apply direct to uni?
Thanks.

Have you had a look at:
http://www.nusonline.co.uk/cards/
Which card you needs depends on what type of student you are. If you are doing a regular undergraduate degree then you should get an NUS Extra card to make use of the student discounts available. You should be able to purchase one from your Students Union once you enrol at uni.
Have you considered opening a LloydsTSB student account? Their freebies include an NUS Extra card and £75 cash if you don't go into overdraft! They say you can't put a value on life... but I live it at half price!0 -
Thanks for that.
I had considered the Lloyds student account, I already bank with them and would prefer to open up a new account in addition to my exisiting Gold account but I don't know if I'd be allowed to do that.0 -
I think you have to pay for the 'Extra' card and it gives you access to special offers and discounts. However, my uni is NUS affiliated and my bog-standard uni card had the NUS logo on it and it was still accepted in all of the shops that offer NUS discounts. I didn't bother buying the 'Extra' card as I couldn't really see the benefit, I looked at the offers and there wasn't really anything that was useful to me. However, that was last year so they may have added a few more things by now.0

It is allowed - just tell them you want to open a seperate student account and not upgrade you existing current account. Shouldn't be a problem with any bank.
As Gingernutmeg says, most places will give you the student discount with the regular free student/nus cards. It is just some specific offers that insist on the Extra card (i.e. Amazon online and PC World). Only pay for it if you will use the offers. They say you can't put a value on life... but I live it at half price!0 -
Places like Topshop/man don't really check. My student card is a university one admitedly it does say NUS on the back but they've never actually asked to look at it in topman.0

Hello,
An NUS extra card is £10 to buy and will give you all the student discounts in shops and some online you usually pick it up at your Student Union office when you go to uni. (at least that's what happens at mine) If your uni isn't on the list it's best to wait till you are there so you can enquire what to do at your uni.
An NUS associate card is for those that have left uni but still wish to be a part of the Student Union, so they will pay or there are some other ways you can get them, but it's mostly for that reason.
Hope this helpsWins for 2022: Hydratem8 Water bottle, diary, flowers, Good food show tickets, childrens books x3,
Thanks to all who post the comps & please let the comping fairy sprinkle dust on my entries!0
