I am using windows 10 but have noticed that avast will not run and that firewall is disabled. I get an error when try and enable it and after reinstalling avast it told me that base filtering engine was missing so would not reinstall. I tried to enable my BFE but I get an access denied message. Now I am all exposed no virus checking and no firewall!!

what version of avast are you running , you need Avast version V2015 R2 onwards to be compatible0

i went to avast site just now and reinstalled their most uptodate version incase the version i had was causing the windows firewall problem. But it will not install because of the BFE problem0

possible fix http://www.registryrecycler.com/blog/2013/09/repair-and-restore-base-filtering-engine-bfe/ says for win 7 , but should translate0

thanks for the tip however the windows 7 bfe.reg file would not run or import onto my machine.0

yes I know , but instructions are there to do it manually , also if you type the words "base filtering engine " into google , you will find this is not unknown and the fixes are listed , admittedly not for win 10 , but can be easily transposed.
have you thought about doing a simple restore to a date before this happened?
also mentioned on that link was the fact that other people were getting the same result as you "cannot import" , the answer that was given was to run this in safe mode.
safe mode is harder to access in win 10 than earlier versions , dependent on your configuration/motherboard , and if you are using a uefi bios , there are different access modes

2 methods of importing the file , right click import/merge or by going into regedit and importing from there0
