Whoaaaa......don't know what's happened

I was defragmenting my laptop's hard drive when I returned to the laptop I noticed it was shutting down. When I tried to start it up again, a black screen states "media cable unplugged" and "operating system not found".:cry:

I've tried F2 and looked at the bios but the hard drive isn't listed. Apart from that I don't know what to do:o

Any ideas......It's an oldish laptop but would like to get it working again as I didn't have time to save photos etc to an independent hard drive. If I take it to a local repair shop, do you think it would it cost the earth to repair?

Thanks in advance:D
