I've been thinking about buying a Kindle paperwhite. Currently £109, sometimes on offer at £99.

As it happens I'm going to the US in a couple of months time. There a Kindle paperwhite costs just $119 - which is round about £78.
Is there any downside to buying one there? I'll be visiting friends so will have an address it can be posted to. I'm assuming they are basically the same thing, unless there's a problem with voltage?

Voltage is the same as they only provide a USB to charge with. I've read on other forums it's fine, I can't see the issue.

Have a look at the newer Voyager it is a good upgrade from the Paperwhite..

I'd hold off getting a Voyage now as we get close to September which is usually when Amazon announces new models. The new-new Paperwhite (or PW3 as it's commonly referred to as it's the 3rd iteration - the one with the 300ppi screen which for now is the same resolution as the current Voyage) only came out a few months ago so that's less likely to be replaced by a new version just now. Typically with a September announcement, the release date is mid to late October - however getting one reasonably fast usually requires putting in a pre-order as soon as they're announced, otherwise it could be over a month wait as they are quite popular

The only issue I can see with getting one from the US would be warranty as it'd probably need to go back there in case of problems.

Basic problems will be customs duty and or vat .
Plus return to USA for repair/warranty if warranty is not valid in the UK .

I bought my old kindle in Walmart on the assurance that I could take it to an Asda if there were any problems. 2012" still going strong.

OH had bought a camera on the same basis a few years previously.

I do get a Kindle Daily Deal appearing on the kindle in dollars and I cannot access these. However, the UK deals come through on my iPad, anyway.

Never had any problems with workings of Kindle or camera .

Why buy a Kindle, when you could get a Hudl, and install a Kindle reader app?

Couldn't you just put it in your carry on luggage, and declare it as personal property?

Presumably, they wouldn't know you didn't have one, when you flew in.

Because the battery lasts for ages and an e-ink screen is really not the same as a tablet screen

The Kindle will be below the value threshold anyway, as long as the OP doesn't bring back a whole bunch of other stuff as well.
