Car Insurance Renewal

Options
I've almost come to the end of my first year of driving - my current policy runs out on the 29th September (at 17:20pm to be very precise according to my policy documents). I've started looking at quotes and I'm quite pleased to see that my insurance has halved compared to last years with other insurers.

I have one niggling (and probably stupid) question which I can't seem to find the answer to, presumably because I can't phrase it correctly for Google. When I buy my new insurance policy (with a different company), I will obviously need to start it on the 29th September to avoid being uninsured for the drive home from work. Will this not lead to an overlap where my car is effectively 'double insured'? How does this work and is it legal? I've obviously never switched insurers before so I'm a little bit unsure about how it all works.

Sorry if this has already been asked and answered!

Tell your new insurance peeps exactly when the old one runs out.

Make sure that you are not on auto renewal with your old insurance, check with them and make sure they know that you will not be renewing. And don't mention the work Cancel....

  • I am very glad you mentioned that - there is a sly little automatic renewal clause in there. The policy was specifically for new drivers as well, how sneaky!

It does say that I'll receive a reminder that my insurance is due for renewal but it doesn't specify when. Should I contact them this early or wait until I receive the renewal reminder?

Its not sneaky, its quite normal and for some its actually a good idea. You would think so too if you
forgot to renew, had a crash then suddenly realised that you forgot to insure your car.

Or be stopped by the police and be prosecuted because you 'forgot'

Its normally a few weeks before renewal is due but put something in yoiur diary or a calendar to remind you at least a week beforehand. If you have nt received it, ring them and get them to confirm in writing that you are not renewing.
