Cancelling Flights Due to Ilnness

Hello!

We booked our flights to Ibiza almost 3 weeks ago. Days before my mother got taken into hospital with heart failure. Due to neglect, she has developed a secondary condition which now means we are no longer able to go away. We didnt purchase travel insurance simply because she took ill so quickly after booking.
We will lose the deposit on the hotel, thats unavoidable but I was wondering if anyone knew our rights (consumer wise) concerning having the flights refunded? I can get them medical evidence thats no issue at all. I have searched the Thomson site over and over and theres no information. I called their customer service centre which is in India and had such a bad line I could not hear a word they were saying to me.

Any help would be gratefully received.

If you purchased flights on their own, the booking conditions state clearly that they are non refundable. You may be able to change the date but presumably this was for a holiday in the next few weeks, so changing dates during the same season may simply not be possible. You must buy insurance the same day you book your holiday, that would have been your only hope. I hope Mum recovers, but that I think is the only hope you have in this situation
  • Thanks for the quick reply Alan!

The irony in that I had planned to book the insurance on the Monday (I needed to wait to be paid as we knew she needed specialist insurance for her health conditions but I always book it the same time as the flights usually) only for her to be taken in on the Monday morning. Just been one nightmare after another.

    Hope your mum improves.

I'd speak to Thomson and ask if you can take the holiday later.

You allege neglect, perhaps get angry about that.
Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.
  • Oh I am super angry about that and have put in a complaint and spoke to a solicitor.

    Thanks!
