lease extension right after completion of purchase

Hi everyone
I have a question regarding lease extension. I completed my purchase recently, and started the informal lease extension immediately after completion.
I know that after completion, the property registration process can still take up to 2-3 months to be finalised, depending on fast Land Registry do their job.
My question is: Can the lease extension be completed BEFORE the property registration is done? Or do we have to finish the registration first, and then complete with lease extension?
