Who should pay? Lock.

The lock on my front door has broken last night. Daughter couldn't get key into the lock and today my key does not go in either to unlock front door. There is no other access into the property. I've called landlord who has said he has all 6 of his maintenance guys on holiday so no one can come and look at it and its my problem to call a locksmith and pay to replace the lock.

Is this right?

This is something that needs fixed sooner rather than later. If it were me I would just pay £15 (might even be less) to change the barrel of the lock myself (easy peasy) rather than wasting time toeing and froing with the landlord because you need a working lock.

I wouldn't have a clue how to change a lock and am currently out of work so money is very very tight, £15 is several days food my my children and I right now sadly.

I guess you could try and deduct it from the rent, though you might need proof of the situation.

Either it is your problem or it is his problem as landlord. The fact that the maintenance guys he uses are on holiday is irrelevant.

Then you're going to have to wait a week for the landlord maintenance guys to get back off holiday and schedule you in.

I'd just fix it myself restoring the original lock at the end of the tenancy.

Look at a few online videos.

All you really need is a screwdriver. Some locks require you to cut a bit down but you can ask the locksmith to do that for you.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Yeah, if the OP wants to fall into arrears (albeit by £15) and p!!s the LL off that's a great idea.

It is possible to deduct the cost of repairs but there's several steps the OP would have to take first and the broken lock would have to be a maintenance issue rather than something the OP or her children has broken.

Which is what I am trying to figure out. He said its my problem but by telling me his guys are all on holiday to me means if they were around, they would come and fix it!

What exactly is the issue with the lock? You and your daughter are having issues fitting your keys into the lock? A squirt of WD40 might sort that out.

I would love to fix the lock myself but i have no idea what to do and to be honest, I don't want to mess around not having a clue and break it further. At least the door opens and closes at the moment, just if I leave the property i cant get back in. With it being a BH weekend and zero money to get a lock smith it looks like my children and I shall be stuck inside.

They keys will go in almost all the way but not quiet, it feels like there is something hard in the way blocking the key going in any further.
