Are our kitchen quotes fair?

Options
Can anyone offer advice re. kitchen quotes - we got 2 from Howdens and Magnet for integrated handle gloss. U shape with 2 tall larder units (1 with pullout), 1 tall unit for double oven, 5 base units, 2 corner base, 2 wide drawer, 5 wall plus 2 wall corners. No appliances or worktop or flooring or fitting - just the units and it came out as around £8500. To me this sounds expensive, we were hoping to do the whole lot with appliances and fitting for around £10000. Not sure whether to haggle or go elsewhere!!

Thanks!

    Hi

Sounds expensive for the quality you get from those 2 manufacturers. I'm sure you will get better value for money and a better design if you want handleless from an independent kitchen specialist who does German kitchens. Do a local to you search, and I'm sure you will find better.

I agree I got a similar size kitchen fitted for £6k 2 years ago with really nice solid gloss cabinets, all pre-assembled. Shop around with local independents as CKdesigner said.

    That's extortionate!!

I have a Crown Imperial kitchen - fantastic quality. It's handleless too, but it's not the integrated kind. There is an aluminium channel that runs along the top behind the door: http://www.crown-imperial.co.uk/rialto/

Just to put it into perspective. Not fitting, no worktops, no appliances.

1 tall oven unit, 1 tall fridge unit, 1 tall pull out pantry, 1 tall broom cupboard 2 pull out corners, 1 drawer unit, 2 standard units, 1 pull out bin, 1 900mm pan drawer unit, 1 small pull out unit, 2 bridge units, 4 wall cupboards.

All in all it came to £8700 as I got it on supply only from a sole trader kitchen fitter. I went to a kitchen fitting company near us, and they quoted us £12k for the same kitchen supply only.

Also should be noted that Howdens and Benchmarx quoted us just over £9000 for the same thing, all in with their own appliances (no worktops)

  • I agree - that's very expensive. I recently ordered a larger kitchen than that with appliances but without worktops for about £7000. I reckon you should be aiming to cut your quote in half.

With howdens (and probably magnet too), 10% off the original price will cut your quote in half. Take a look at the discounts you've been given. You should be aiming for between 75% - 80%.

Have you haggled at all, or is that just their first price?

If it's their first price, of course it needs to be haggled. :p

My mum spent three hours in Wren negotiating hers and eventually got them down to half their original "price" (they probably gave in to get rid of her). She then had a shocking fit beset by issues, so not recommending Wren, but they're all as haggleable as each other.

See what the cost would be with diy-kitchens (do a search on this forum, there are lots of threads about them). I have bought a kitchen from them.
  • agree with everyone else, sounds expensive, especially for the quality you'd be getting. You can get better English kitchens for the same money, and if you went German (eg Leicht, Hacker, Schuller, but obviously not their high-spec range) you'd be paying a similar amount for a far better product. Did mine not so long ago, and the quotes from Wickes and Leicht were pretty similar!

But remember - irrespective of how expensive the units are, the most important factor for a good-looking kitchen is having a competent fitter. Good luck!
  • Thanks everyone, I really appreciate you taking the time to comment, we've decided to get a quote from a high street (prob Wickes) and also 2 independents near us to see what quotes are like and then do some haggling!

Good point about a good fitter - we have one highly recommended so hopefully he'll do a good job.
