One for All remote control question

Possibly not the right forum for this but here goes.
Batteries leaked on my TV remote and some buttons have stopped working. I could get a "one for all" direct replacement (Samsung) but am considering a "one for all" simple replacement (URC 6410) as it's a bit more stylish & has big buttons.
I'm sure plenty of people have these and will be able to answer my question: if I use the "copy" function to learn a function from my existing remote must I assign that function to a button I wouldn't otherwise use? The online manual doesn't make it clear and I wondered if the button would continue to perform its original function, but would do the new function when pressed in combination with another (a bit like the ctrl key on a PC keyboard).
Thanks in anticipation.

If you can't think of anything nice to write, say nothing. Rudeness isn't clever.

From the manual:

I think you can copy onto the normal keys and it will overwrite their current function.Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0
