Christening Present for little boy

I am going to a friend's sons christening next week and am not sure what to take as a present as have never been to a christening before and none of my friends have children.
Is the idea I buy a present for him or them? If so do I get a toy or a keepsake or what:o??

TIA

We asked for and got a hand and footprint voucher for our son's christening. They are done in clay.

I know they do them in John Lewis but sure lots of other placed would do them.

I still have my sons up from when he was 12 weeks old. They come framed in your choice of colour and frame.

It depends on your budget though because these were about £70 but fantastic.

Thanks, I probably should have put a budget in my 1st post; I don't really want to go over £20...:p

You could pay for the actual sitting at a professional portrait studio or if the sitting costs more than that then get a voucher towards one.

Again we got that and liked but it depends on whether the parents could/or would want to pay for the photos when done or like that sort of thing:confused:

Usual items of birth certificate holder, photo frame, silver piggy bank?

I usually get a child's picture frame (like a metal/enamel one with a teddy bear or rattle on it, IYSWIM) and then a little outfit or 2 for them to wear in 3-6 months (be aware of the seasons etc). Last time I bought one for now and one for the autumn, and a teddy for the baby too (OH was godfather so needed to be a 'bigger' present).

Always seems to go down well - something useful and something to keep.

I've seen hand and foot print kits in places like Mothercare - don't remember how much they were though, sorry.

Silver photo frame, engraved money tray, engraved napkin ring, premium bond, newspaper from the birth day.
  • For £20 you could make a nappy cake! They are really unique and I bet the parents will be thrilled with it. Have a look at the photos on here, they're really good.

Something I have given in the past is a tree (I usually go for an apple tree!). It is something a little different from all the usual traditional "silver" things - some of which can be nice, but (judging by opinions gathered from friends who have kids ;)) tend to just sit around gathering dust for the most part...plus there is a limit to how many of these things you really need.

The idea is that it is a gift which grows with the child, and by the time they are old enough to take an interest, it is usually producing fruit, which means they can eat the stuff from their own tree - which makes it more appealing (and on the plus side, encourages them to eat healthily - always a bonus!! :p).

Just an idea for something different... :D

  • I always buy tooth fairy pots for girls + cufflinks for boys..........something to keep and wear in case of cufflinks into adulthood.............don't cost a fortune but both are beautiful reminders...............obviously if religious a bible or prayer book is good too.........hope this helps

I am going to a friend's child's Christening and have ordered a 'My Christening' photo album from "Bundles of Joy" website. There are bound to be quite a few photos taken that day, and it will be a special book to record the events of the day. It was £16.50 and £3.50 postage.

When my friends little girl was christened 4 years ago,i took her a silver baby bangle, silver first curl/tooth holder which i got engraved with her initials and D/O/B and a goregous winnie the pooh ornament from debenhams(the collectable kind).Since then every birthday or xmas myself or one of her godparents all add to her little collection by buying a new item and they are all on display in her room.Winnie and peter rabbit are loved by all past &present so it's nice to build a collection up -we are getting her alice in wonderland next.
