They are coming out as insurance groups 10 and 7 - but as someone said previously on here - that doesn't actually mean they will be more expensive to insure than a group 1 car...
I did a fairly basic search on Autotrader looking for manual, petrol cars under nine years old, with an insurance group of 10 or less and a price range of £1000-£1500.
I picked those two because I think they might prove more reliable than much of what is on offer. That might negate the added insurance cost (if indeed there is one).0 -
I'll continue in the vein of simple Jap cars and suggest the Suzuki Ignis.
You do right looking for a low spec. Less to go wrong.0 -
Something like this?

10 year old Renault Clio petrol Authentique with unburstable 1149cc 8valve engine. Anything from £500 and £1000 will get you a cracker. Easy to buy, insure, park and look after and gives a much bigger car feel when your actually driving it compared to the recycled white goods that everyone seems to salivate over.0

And no end of electrical gremlins. I agree the engine is solid though.0 -
Get a Toyota Yaris - mines got 97,000 on the clock, nothing goes wrong bar general fair wear and tear. 1L engine, £20 petrol does around 140 miles (and I'm not an economical driver). Best car I've had, 2002 model. Very basic, no AC or anything, but drives like a dream.0
