"Extended" cheque clearance at Santander

I paid in a cheque yesterday at my local Santander branch. I checked how long it would take to clear and was given the usual 2-4-6 rule, unless it went into extended clearing, which obviously took much longer. Can't find anything about this in their T's & C's. Google seems to only associate it with Santander.
Can anyone tell me what this is all about.

May relate to cheques drawn on non-UK banks or non-sterling cheques which fall outside the 2-4-6 rule. Also, cheques which go through money laundering checks would have extended clearing also.0

could it have something to do with the Bank Holiday,
