OP have a look in local ads to find the place that does driveshaft/cvs/radiators/powersteering stuff. There's always one to cater for the many faults on high volume cars, especially with taxi class cars like yours. I would check the output from both the battery and the alternator to exclude these, but usually it is the pump unit that goes and all you need to do is specify which of the choice of two it is, as you have; yours is the one behind the engine.
Not fortunes to swap, recons are big business for these, but make sure you get a firm quote before you commit.

Is it a diesel, you may be looking at the fuel filter.

No mine is petrol, and I just had a quick glance. I will re-inspect it more carefully.

The star shaped thing is the top for the PAS fluid reservoir.

Shine a torch into the side of it to see the level.

  • Hi Strider

Thanks, any idea where I can get the star shaped tool to open it?

It's a "torx" bit, not sure what size though.

I should stress that torx is supposed to be tamper proof, the reason they use them is:

    a) to stop people saving money by doing jobs themselves
    b) to stop people screwing up something important or safety critical.

The Haynes manual shows a normal screw top.

But Vectra C show a torx cap with normal hand removable cap:

  • Hi Inner Zone

I saw a video on Youtube, with a guy filling up the hydraulic fluid himself. In the video (for another model of Vectra.) It was located under the wheel arch, and it had the star shaped thing on it. He used a torx to open it.

    Cheers

  • I've just had another look. The reservoir is definitely behind the engine. It's got 'power steering' helpfully written on it. Doubt I'll be able to shine a torch through it, so will need to get the tool.
