New Build Home Council Tax Question

Hi

We moved into our new Persimmon Home at the end of June and we have only just got our Council tax Status through.

but i can see we are being changed full price and they have also backdated it to June when we 1st moved into the property. so i have higher repayments until feb.

but my question is, is it true im entitled to come kind of discount because i live on a new build site (a building site!)? at the moment Cheshire East they are not currently able to offer the full council services at my address IE roads services Street lights etc etc with the exception of the Bins collections (all tho not reliable) and (we hope) emergency Services.

has any one else had any kind of feedback on this or is it just another Urban myth?

Thanks in Advance

  • council tax is not pay as you go ..there is no discount if you don't use things such as social services or schools or you haven't called the fire brigade.

You aren't going to get a discount because you are living on a building site. This isn't your councils fault.

Also council tax for new builds can't be sorted until the VOA inform the council of their banding decision. Hence you only recently getting the bill from your council.

Of course they would back date it til June - that's when you moved in. You should have put aside the money from the start to avoid the shock.

I've already rang the local council where I'm moving to with regards to council tax on our new build and they advised us to give them as much advance notice of completion as possible so they can instruct the VOA to go out and band the property.

When I moved into my new build I already knew what band my house was in, and budgeted accordingly whilst I was waiting on my formal assessment. Then, when I got the letter, I just paid the full balance off and paid monthly as normal.

If you pay the current outstanding amount, your payments will go to the normal amount each month.

You can request payments to be spread over all remaining months; so have a payment in March too. Next year you can request payments over 12 months rather than 10, this used to be at discretion of Council, but is now an entitlement for all.
