Garage side door

We are looking to get an external side door installed into the side of our detached garage.

The job will involve cutting a hole in the wall, installing frame and lintel etc and the supply of all of the materials including the door.

The quote we have had so far is for £500 including vat.

How does this sound, I honestly didn't know what it would cost before we got this quote and its been tough to find anyone actually interested.

sounds cheap to me if it includes all materials.
  • Hi bclark,
Not sure if this is too late and you’ve had it done already, but I will give my two cents anyway!
Your builder will need to measure up, cut a hole in the wall, then knock out and remove the remains. Cut another hole at the top for the lintel and then put the lintel in.
Overall, the major costs are going to be the cost of:
    - the labour (£100-£200)
    - garage side door (£100-£400)
    - the lintel itself (approx. £16+ for concrete lintel- assuming single skin 6 inch block. Approx. £35+ for metal catnic lintel for double skin cavity wall).
If you want a side door that will match your garage door, from someone like Garador that’s going to cost around £400 (but you could probably haggle a 10% or more discount).
But if it doesn’t have to match, you could get something a bit cheaper at somewhere like Wickes, in the £100 - £300 range…
There’s always going to be variations depending on the cost of your materials, complexity of the job, who your builder is, their experience and proficiency etc… My only other advice would be remember to get a quote not an estimate! All in all, your quote sounds pretty good.
    Hope this helps,
    Cheers Paul.
