Over 75 on Eon Plan - am I on the wrong plan?
Options
I was on the E.On Staywarm plan but once they ended that I was put onto the E.On Energy Plan - I take this is there standard plan.
Now have I been put on the wrong plan? They say I am on their cheapest plan? What do I do.
My usage is 5665kw electricty and 16418kw gas. I have an old home which I need to heat the year around.
Has E.On put me on the wrong plan and if so what should I do?
As I am over 75 I thought suppliers had to offer special plans?

Staywarm was rarely a good deal. Perhaps in the first year when customers could really ramp up the "all you can eat" aspect of it, but when they got a handle on your consumption they'd set your payments accordingly.
Anyway. Eon Energy plan is their standard tariff. It may well be their cheapest - all the others that I can see on their website are fixed tariffs, which often come at a premium.
To be sure, put your usage and postcode into a price comparison site - I find energyhelpline the most user friendly. Be prepared for one of the smaller newer entrants to the market to be far more competitive on price than the Big 6.
E.On offer an AgeUK tariff for which you have to be over 60, this will show up on energyhelpline. Suppliers aren't mandated to offer any special help to older people - the state does that through the Winter Fuel Payment.0 -

I have just been on the price comparison and it seems GB Energy could save me £454 - this is a huge amount. Currently I pay £1600 for my usage.0 -

Eon's starywarm tariff ended almost 2 years ago.
When you were contacted, you would have been told which tariff you would default to, and that appears to have happened. You would have been offered the opportunity to have another tariff from Eon, but you would have needed to contact them to request it.
What makes you think a commericial supplier needs to offer you a special tariff because of your age? If you did think that, that would have been something else to have asked Eon about 2 years ago when they told you they were stopping staywarm
You should automatically be getting £200 a year benefit to help pay for your energy requirement (£300 for those that are 80)
Consult a comparison site to find the best deal for you.0 -
How long does it take to switch suppliers?
I have never switched suppliers before.0 -
Couple of weeks .
Key is for you to take a number of meter readings before and after in case of any query .
Not seen any special have to plans due to a number like 70 or 75 .
Make sure the company you sign up to is part of the Warm Home Scheme for the kickback on that .
£200 PA
+ Cold Weather Payments
+ Warm Home electric rebate .
As said the Staywarm plan was good ten years or so ago for about three years .Most users then switched to cheaper plans .0 -
Hi bigpappa
Already some great advice on here. Thanks all. Thought I'd stop by with a bit more information.
As Staywarm contracts ended, we wrote to customers to let them know. Where possible, we also followed this up with a phone call. At the same time, we advised about the alternative tariffs available. Unless we were told differently, customers were automatically placed on Energy Plan. This is our standard product. There are no tie-ins with this product leaving customers free to change tariff/supplier at any time without penalty.
We do have other tariffs available but these are contracted products with specific restrictions. Before putting customers on any of these tariffs, we need to have a conversation with them to highlight these terms and receive their agreement that they're acceptable. Alternatively, customers can see the tariffs and switch themselves through our website.
There's an age specific tariff, Age UK Fixed 2 Year, only open to customers aged 60 and over or between 50 and 59 and on our Priority Services Register due to disability or illness. Prices may not be that different from our other tariffs but they're fixed for 2 years and there's no exit fee. Again, this is a contracted product and we need a customer's permission before switching them to it.
As others have said, pop your usage in kWh on to the independent comparison sites. These will list all the options open to you both with us and with the other suppliers. See what's best for you.
As you're over 75, have you applied for Warm Home Discount? This is a Government backed scheme to help customers who qualify with their energy bills. It's a payment of £140 so worth having a look. There's more information plus an application form on our website. We're taking applications now.
Also, have you heard about the Energy Company Obligation? This is another Government led scheme aimed at cutting usage by providing help with energy saving stuff like loft and cavity wall insulation. Again, there's stuff on our website about it.
Hope this is of interest bigpappa. Let me know if you need any more information as happy to help.

I am over 75 but I am not on pension credit or any benefit so not sure if I qualify for the Warm Home discount.
Has the Government stopped the Winter Fuel payments?
So to get the winter fuel payments I need to be with a provider that is part of the scheme?0 -
Hi bigpappa
Warm Home Discount and the Winter Fuel Payments are different things. Warm Home Discount is paid by the energy company supplying the electricity. It's added to the account.
Winter Fuel Payments come directly from the Government. Not sure about this. Best to contact the relevant Government department.
With Warm Home Discount, if you pop your details on to the application form on our website, we'll be in touch to let you know if you qualify. We'll let you know if you've been successful within 14 weeks of receiving your application. Alternatively, if you change supplier, make sure the new provider offers this service and apply to them once the switch has gone through. Changes of supplier usually complete in about two and half weeks from the date the switch starts.
Hope this is useful bigpappa.

Has the Government stopped the Winter Fuel payments?
No it hasn't and you get them regardless of income or energy supplier. It should be a payment into your bank account each autumn.0
