Fraud (ebay) question

I wasn't sure where to put this thread but a friend lost her debit card on Sunday and didn't report it as lost until Monday by which time someone had used it to buy something (£130) on eBay. I know that she should have reported it lost immediately but without going into detail she is very suicidal anyway so this wasn't top of her to-do list.

Her bank (I don't know which one) told her that the money has gone and there's nothing that they can do but that she should contact eBay. I'm not sure whether she bothered.

Does anyone have any experience of trying to claim money back for this sort of thing from eBay? If there's next to no chance I won't badger her to try to get it back as she's enough on her plate.

Thanks.

it would have gone though PayPal..
if she can prove it wasn't her, they should refund.. But, she needs to tell them, and not do nothing..

Thanks. She's gone AWOL today but as and when she calms down and gets in touch I'll try to get her to do it.

Was it Paypal in the first place, not the bank?
If so, Paypal is the first one to contact, not the bank. Only if they refuse, you can try asking your bank for chargeback agaist Paypal. Fraudulent transaction is one of possible reasons for chargeback that reportedly is possible against Paypal too.

Okay. That's interesting. How would she know? Does anyone have any phone numbers?

I can't stress enough that she's in a very bad state. I need to make it as easy as I can for her.

I twice had fraudulent debits via Paypal (but I did not lose my debit card, my account was somehow hacked). They were good about refunding quickly.

However, once you add your details to Paypal they remain on your (the thief's) account, so your friend must immediately cancel her card (but I understand from you she has now).

Thanks everyone. I've passed the information onto another of her friends. Hopefully she will be in contact soon and be willing to make some calls.
  • PayPal are really excellent at reimbursing fraudalent use of a c/card. It might take a while as they have to go through the motions. I had a US$1200 debit for some Mexican Casino Chips (amazing, huh?) and got the money back after about 6 weeks and even made a small profit due to currency fluctuations
