Default and Credit Building

Hi all, not sure if this is the correct place to ask, however I'm looking for some advice on my credit file and rebuilding my credit history.
My husband and I finally paid off all our credit cards and loans through a DAS scheme - and as we defaulted in 2010 our credit files should show completely clear by early next year (March 2016) - currently everything shows as default with a zero balance.
As we are now in a much better place financially we'd like to start the road to building our credit history again so that we can eventually apply for a mortgage again.
So my question is what is the best way to do this? Do I apply for a credit card for "bad credit" history now or do I wait until my files are showing as cleared (next year) to do this?
Also how long does it generally take someone like me to re-build my credit history before I can apply for a mortgage without a horrendous interest percentage??
Any help/advice would be much appreciated!
Thanks!!!

I'd try someone like aqua or Vanquis for a card in the first instance.0

Aqua & Vanquis are both good options, the sooner you start to build some positive credit history the better.0

And a couple of mobile phone contracts.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0
