we are going to menorca very early on Monday morning so wont have time to eat, we have opted to not have in flight meal so I was thinking of taking drinks and maybe sandwiches, bit of fruit etc. I have now been told everything gets confiscated before you go through the gate does anybody know if this is true or what you are allowed to take?.

You could take a couple of empty plastic bottles to fill up with water after security. I've never had these confiscated in the UK - and it's no big deal if you lose disposable bottles. Stansted has a drinking fountain outside loos just after security and I'd guess other airports probably have drinking water.
Is there a Boots after security at the airport? The meal deals can be good value and can even be bought with Boots points.
We just had a warning from Speedferries that there's a new restriction on dairy products and meat being taken out of the country. Presume this applies to flights too. Hmm. That makes sandwiches a bit restricted.0 -
Mmm - they took my orange squash off me  so the empty bottles is a great idea
I took about 36 sarniz to Turkey last September (I have a terrible fear of starving), crisp, biscuits and sweets, didn't want to risk the fruit. 0 -

I had one (totally empty) confiscated at Gatwick. So if this happens to you, be prepared to buy something to drink after security.0 -
We flew to Menorca from Birmingham in July on First Choice. We also declined the airline meal and took sandwiches with no problems at all. Done this many times from different airports without anyone objecting. They have no problems with you taking non-alcoholic drinks on the plane either, but of course you have to get them airside.
I cannot imagine why anyone actually needs to be served a hot meal on a flight of 2 hours. A few sarnies for the airport or the flight will ensure even the greediest pig doesn't starve to death. After all, airline meals are universally rubbish. To pay extra for them is madness.
Cutting out airline meals saved 3 of us £36 on this trip. Not having the coach transfers saved us £45, and only having 15kg baggage instead of 20kg saved us £30. That is £111 in all. We hired a car from the airport through Carjet for £85 for the week with what we saved. That's MSE for you.;)0 -
I do this every time I fly as I have an allergy to potatoes which are virtually impossible to get an assurance from the airline that they aren't included in the meal. Have taken sandwiches and shop-bought pasta salads fine, and bought water airside as I like to drink plenty on the plane. Haven't been through since the foot and mouth scare though, and don't know what impact that had.
If you want to reduce the risk by buying airside, here's a list of what's available at a couple of different UK airports:

Birmingham:
Has several cafes airside, have used them, but can't find an online listing.
