drainage in garden

Hi I am looking for some advice had a couple of landscapers out to quote for some work to garden and one of them said they would need to dig drains into garden we have since decided that we can't afford the work and I was wondering if anyone could advise what this involves

help greatly appreciated

    They are probably suggesting digging trenches and laying piping (used to be clay pipes but normally perforated plastic today) on a gravel bed to drain water away from parts of the garden which are getting waterlogged. The trench would then be back filled with gravel with a top layer of soil.
